August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day
For millions of families around the world, August 31st is a solemn date set aside for remembrance and advocacy. International Overdose Awareness Day unites them all with a common goal: to ensure loved ones who have lost the battle with drug or alcohol abuse are not forgotten and that other families do not have to know their pain. This global awareness movement helps to push the growing substance abuse epidemic and its consequences to the forefront, providing opportunities for earnest and honest conversation and support.
At Niznik Behavioral Health, we recognize the lasting impact addiction has on the families of people living with substance abuse disorders, especially those who lose the battle. Fatal overdose has become the leading cause of death in people under the age of 50, surpassing car accidents, cancers, and violent crime.
Addiction does not discriminate and has continued to claim lives in every social demographic regardless of age, race, gender identity, or economic standing. Misconceptions regarding what addiction looks like and stigmas surrounding seeking help for drug and alcohol abuse disorders only serve to contribute to the deadly consequences of the substance abuse epidemic. By recognizing and participating in International Overdose Awareness Day, families and friends honor their loved one’s memories by combating these barriers and other to recovery treatment.
If you would like to participate in a local awareness event on August 31st, visit the International Overdose Awareness Day website to find one near you or register your own. Otherwise, online awareness events hosted on social media sites like Facebook are also a great way to show your support. Overdose survivors and people affected by overdose are invited to share their personal stories and experiences to help promote awareness and healing as a community. Not ready to share your own story? That’s okay, too! Show your support using profile picture filters or wearing purple and/or silver in solidarity.
